NIMBY – Where the Wild Things Are
In Oakland, the arts take many forms and do-it-yourself enthusiasts play an enormous role. Collaboration is also synonymous with the arts in Oakland. NIMBY is the Bay Area’s largest do-it-yourself (DIY) and industrial art space in East Oakland with over 40 different arts groups and craftspeople celebrating more than five years of artistic creativity. NIMBY fosters community values that encourage collaboration and innovation. Oakland School for the Arts is a tuition-free public charter school, located in the Fox Theater building, whose students (grades 6-12) complete a rigorous, college-preparatory curriculum while focusing on one of seven arts emphases: Dance, Instrumental Music, Vocal Music, Literary Arts, Theater, Visual Arts or Arts Management. To retain their artistic privileges, OSA’s students must meet high academic standards. OSA was the only Oakland school to win the 2009 California Distinguished School Award from the CA Department of Education. VERY PUBLIC ARTS is pleased to present NIMBY artists Jen Forbes, Jamie Vaida and Feng Jin; OSA video artist Jamie Protopappas; lighting, set and couture design by Theodore Dawson. Generous underwriting by NIMBY, OSA and VERY PUBLIC ARTS.
